Why the Open Metaverse Matters

2025-06-1840230

openverse

Ownership - Uncensorship & Free Global Trade. These are the backbone of any system that aims to empower people rather than use them. If we want a metaverse that isn’t just another digital mall owned by 'big tech', we need to build it differently. Open, decentralized, and anchored to something more solid than ephimeral hype. That’s where the real tech comes in.

MOST current "metaverses" are just funny Disneyland theme parks. Slick, immersive, but closed. You're renting space but never owning it. Your avatar? Just to use it into. Not portable. Your items? Subject to platform policy. EZ to lose, I know many friends that got hacked and lost all their well earned items. And what about your identity? Well, ask the admin WHERE is placed in that plenty corporate database with a nice backdoor for the NSA. The perfect nightmare that many cypunk authors elegantly warnd us.

We must to keep expanding what proves to works, open data that can be used by anyone. Do you imagine to apply the same principles as Wikipedia to the metaverse? What about to just be part of a space where when a new physical tool is invented, you can just download it, print it and use it at home. Or what about to simulate physics, learn it together at a digital university and have your certificate that you can use on every part of the globe. Or what about to build a metaverse that can't be censored or owned by any company? That doesnt just sounds right, it also sounds possible!

This could be what an open-source metaverse looks like:

  • Where whatever users own land, identities, assets.
  • Where creators set their own rules and royalties.
  • Where anyone can build, fork, and remix their own planets.
  • Where trade is borderless, peer-to-peer, and programmable.

But for that to work, we need a trust anchor. A base layer that can't be tampered with.

Bitcoin fixes this

Bitcoin, the mother of cryptos, is slow but It’s resilient, neutral, and really f* hard to change. It’s the safest digital settlement in existence. That makes it the perfect BASE for a metaverse that really values property rights and censorship resistance.

But Bitcoin alone isn’t enough. The Block Size War taught us a clear lesson: scaling Bitcoin's capabilities without compromising its core requires a second layer. We haven’t found a safer, more reliable path than this. SO: That’s where Stacks comes in.

Stacks: A Bitcoin Layer 2 for the Metaverse

Stacks brings on-chain contracts to Bitcoin without altering its core. It allows developers to build apps, NFTs, DAOs, and yes—entire metaverses—that inherit Bitcoin’s finality and security.

What makes it a strong option for the open metaverse:

  • Bitcoin settlement: Every asset, land plot, or identity can anchor to Bitcoin.
  • Clarity smart contracts: Human-readable, predictable logic for governance, trading, and composability.
  • PoX Mining: A unique consensus that rewards STX holders in BTC.
  • Decentralized identities (BNS): Self-sovereign naming systems baked in.

Stacks isn’t just a BTC L2. It’s also a strong open community where you can freely join and build.

What Motivates This Movement

  1. Digital Self-Ownership

    • People want to own their digital selves: avatars, data, social graphs.
    • The metaverse must reflect that. Not extract it.
  2. Censorship Resistance

    • Artists, activists, and citizens need platforms that don't silence them.
    • Open protocols > app store policies.
  3. Global Trade & Collaboration

    • Virtual economies are already real economies.
    • An open metaverse built on Bitcoin allows for uncensorable trade, borderless interaction, and real value creation.

Where to Go from Here

We already have the tools:

  • 3D engines like Godot or Webaverse (Apparently discontinued but great OSS).
  • Protocols like IPFS for decentralized storage.
  • Governance via DAOs.
  • Settlement on Bitcoin via Stacks.

What we need is coordination. Culture. Builders who value freedom over just instant profit. Projects that lean open by default.

This is just a first call out. In the meanwhile, I keep building what I believe is the right path to go forward. In my personal experience, I'm trusting that the better way to foster modelers and digital artists for all over this planet is to allow them to express freely, is to use an open direction.
